For generations, traditional soap was made from simple ingredients — fats, oils and an alkali transformed through the soap-making process into a hard, long-lasting cleansing bar.
Today, as more people look closely at what's in the products they use on their skin, traditional tallow soap is making a comeback.
At Aussie Tallow, we take this traditional approach one step further. Our soap bars are handmade on our family farm in Mount Barker, Western Australia, using beef tallow that we render ourselves and fresh raw milk from our own Jersey cows.
But what actually makes tallow and raw Jersey cow milk such a beautiful combination for soap?
Tallow soap is traditionally made using rendered animal fat — most commonly beef tallow — as one of the main fats in the soap-making process.
When fats are combined with sodium hydroxide during soap making, a chemical reaction known as saponification occurs. The original fats and sodium hydroxide are transformed into soap.
The particular fats chosen by a soap maker have a significant effect on the finished bar.
Beef tallow naturally contains fatty acids including stearic, palmitic and oleic acids. Stearic and palmitic acids are particularly useful in soap making because they contribute to the firmness and longevity of a bar.
Research into tallow-based soaps similarly identifies these saturated fatty acids as contributors to a harder, longer-lasting soap. That's one of the reasons tallow has been valued in traditional soap making for generations.
A good bar of soap needs to do more than simply produce bubbles.
We want a bar that feels substantial in your hand, lasts well in the shower and creates a beautiful creamy lather.
Tallow is particularly suited to this. Its fatty-acid composition helps produce a firm, durable soap with a dense, creamy lather. Modern research into tallow soap formulation also supports the role of tallow's palmitic and stearic acids in producing the hard texture associated with quality bar soaps.
For us, however, there's another reason for using tallow.
It's a traditional farm resource that we can take from its original form as beef suet, carefully render and purify ourselves, and turn into something useful.
Rather than buying a ready-made soap base and putting our name on it, we are involved right from the beginning.
This is where our soaps become particularly special to us.
Our Jersey cows are part of everyday life here on our farm, and the fresh raw milk used in our soaps comes directly from them. Jersey milk is naturally known for its rich milk-fat content.
When used in handmade soap, milk contributes to the character and feel of the finished bar and helps create the rich, creamy lather we love in our soaps.
The combination of raw Jersey cow milk and tallow produces a very different experience from using a conventional liquid body wash.
Our finished bars leave the skin feeling clean, soft and nourished rather than stripped and tight.
One of the things we're most proud of at Aussie Tallow is knowing where our ingredients come from.
The raw Jersey milk doesn't arrive at our workshop as a powdered ingredient from an unknown source. It starts with our own Jersey cows here on the farm.
Likewise, the beef tallow we use is rendered from beef suet sourced from our own grass-fed and finished cattle or locally sourced when required. We triple purify our tallow and slowly render it before using it to make our products.
We then combine the tallow and fresh Jersey milk with carefully selected oils to create our soap bars in small batches.
It means there's a genuine connection between the farm, the animals, the ingredients and the finished bar of soap.
That's what farm-made skincare means to us.
Walk down a supermarket aisle and you'll find countless bottles of body wash.
There's nothing inherently wrong with choosing a liquid cleanser, but traditional bar soap offers a very different approach.
A handmade tallow soap is a concentrated solid product. There's no need for a large plastic bottle containing a predominantly liquid formulation.
A properly cared-for tallow soap bar can also last surprisingly well because tallow contributes hardness to the finished soap.
For people trying to simplify their bathroom routine or reduce the number of plastic bottles they use, returning to a traditional bar can be refreshingly simple.
One of the things our customers love about our Raw Jersey Cow Milk & Tallow Soap Bars is their versatility.

“Handmade” can mean many different things.
For Aussie Tallow, it means considerably more than pouring a purchased soap base into a mould.
Our soap begins with ingredients that are intimately connected with our farm.
We care for our Jersey cows.
We milk them. We render our tallow. We make the soap. And we package the finished bars here in Mount Barker, Western Australia.
That's the difference between a product that simply has a farm-inspired label and one that genuinely comes from a working Australian farm.
Tallow soap is soap made using rendered animal fat, usually beef tallow, as one of its primary fats. During traditional soap making, the fats react with an alkali through a process called saponification to form soap.
The fatty-acid composition of beef tallow helps create a hard, durable bar with a rich, creamy lather. In particular, stearic and palmitic acids contribute firmness and longevity to soap.
Raw milk soap is handmade soap in which raw milk is incorporated into the soap-making formulation. At Aussie Tallow, we use fresh raw Jersey cow milk from our own cows in our tallow soap bars.
We have our own Jersey herd on our family farm, and Jersey milk's naturally rich character makes it particularly well suited to the creamy soap bars we make. Using our own milk also allows us to know exactly where one of our key ingredients comes from.
Everyone's skin is different, but our tallow and raw milk soaps are formulated to cleanse while leaving the skin feeling soft and comfortable. If you have particularly sensitive skin, our Unscented variety contains no essential oils or clay.
Our Raw Jersey Cow Milk & Tallow Soap Bars are made for use on the face, body and hands, as well as for shaving.
Lye — sodium hydroxide — is used to make traditional bar soap. It reacts with fats and oils during saponification, creating soap. Proper formulation and soap making are therefore very different from simply having sodium hydroxide sitting unchanged in the finished formulation. The underlying chemistry of soap formation is well established.
