Shampoo Bar vs Liquid Shampoo: What's the Difference?

One of the biggest differences is simply water.

Liquid shampoo contains a significant amount of water, which is one reason it needs to be packaged in a bottle and typically requires a preservation system.

A solid shampoo bar is much more concentrated.

Our Aussie Tallow Shampoo Bar weighs 110g, and when paired with our 110g Conditioner Bar, the two concentrated bars provide approximately the equivalent of four standard 250ml bottles of liquid shampoo and conditioner. 

This makes solid hair care particularly appealing to people wanting to reduce the number of plastic bottles accumulating in their bathroom.

Do Shampoo Bars Clean Hair Properly?

Yes — a properly formulated shampoo bar can produce a rich lather and effectively cleanse both the hair and scalp.

Our shampoo bars use Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA) as cleansing ingredients.

Despite the similar-looking names, SLSA is not the same ingredient as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).

Our formula creates a creamy lather while cleansing the scalp and hair, with tallow, avocado oil and aloe vera incorporated into the formulation.

The result is a shampoo bar designed to leave the hair feeling fresh and clean without needing a bottle of conventional liquid shampoo.

Why Put Tallow in a Shampoo Bar?

Tallow is probably better known for its use in traditional soaps and increasingly in natural skincare, but it can also be incorporated into solid hair-care formulations.

At Aussie Tallow, tallow is particularly important to us because we don't simply purchase a finished tallow ingredient and put our label on it.

Our products are handmade in small batches on our family farm in Mount Barker, Western Australia, using grass-fed and finished beef tallow that we render ourselves.

Tallow provides fatty acids and helps give our shampoo and conditioner bars their rich, nourishing character. It's part of what makes our bars quite different from many mass-produced solid shampoos.

What's in an Aussie Tallow Shampoo Bar?

Our 110g Shampoo Bar contains: Beef Tallow, Avocado Oil, Aloe Vera Juice, Australian Clay, Stearic Acid, Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB) and Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSA).

Depending on the variety chosen, we use Australian yellow, pink or green clay. Our scented varieties also contain their respective essential oil blends. 

Each ingredient has been selected as part of the overall solid formulation.

Aloe vera juice is incorporated into the bar alongside our cleansing ingredients.

Avocado oil adds an emollient component to the formulation. 

Australian clay is another characteristic ingredient in our shampoo bars and varies depending on the variety. And, of course, beef tallow forms an important part of our farm-made formula.

Do You Need Conditioner After Using a Shampoo Bar?

You don't necessarily have to use conditioner every time you shampoo, but many people find their hair feels softer, smoother and easier to manage when they follow shampoo with a conditioner.

That's why we make our shampoo and conditioner as a complementary pair.

Our Tallow Conditioner Bar contains: Beef Tallow, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BTMS), Stearic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Glycerine, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin E.

Scented varieties also contain their corresponding essential oil blend. The conditioner bar is designed to leave hair feeling silky and manageable and to make detangling easier.

Shampoo Bars Can Mean Less Plastic

This is one of the simplest advantages of making the switch. Think about how many shampoo and conditioner bottles a household can go through over the course of a year.

Solid bars remove the need for the traditional disposable shampoo bottle and take up very little room in the bathroom.

Are Shampoo Bars Good for Travelling?

They can be extremely convenient. A solid shampoo bar:

• can't leak through your luggage
• takes up very little space
• doesn't require a large plastic bottle
• is easy to take camping or travelling
• can be stored in a draining soap container between uses

Just make sure your bar is allowed to dry thoroughly after use. Keeping it sitting in water will shorten its lifespan.

How Do You Use a Shampoo Bar?

Using one is easy. Wet your hair thoroughly and wet the shampoo bar. You can either rub the bar between your hands to create a lather or gently work it over wet hair before massaging the lather through your scalp. Rinse thoroughly. Then wet your conditioner bar and glide a small amount over the mid-lengths and ends of your hair. Work it through, allow it to condition briefly and rinse.

You don't need a huge amount — solid bars are concentrated.

Shampoo Bars vs Liquid Shampoo: Which Is Better?

There isn't one answer that's right for everybody. A good liquid shampoo can certainly clean your hair effectively. But solid shampoo bars have some very practical advantages.
